Swimming is an important life skill, and our lessons follow the Swim England Learn to Swim
Programme to help swimmers of all ages and abilities.
Join us and build confidence in the water at your own pace!
- Classes available for everyone, from beginners to advanced
- 50 weeks of lessons, held weekly

Class description and awards
adult & Baby
0 to 18 months
- Designed for babies aged 0 to 18 months, before they start walking
- Builds water confidence through play, songs, and rhymes
- Parent or guardian required in the water
- Parent or guardian required in the water
- Includes Discovery Ducklings 1 & 2 awards to celebrate progress

adult & Toddler
18 months - 3 years
- For toddlers aged 18 months to 3 years (younger children may join if ready)
- Focuses on skills like blowing bubbles, jumping in, turning, and returning to the entry point
- Parent or guardian must be in the water
- Toddlers not potty trained must wear swim nappies and suitable swimwear
- Includes Discovery Ducklings 1 & 2 awards to mark progress

3 to 4 years
- For children aged 3 to 4 years who need a parent or guardian in the water

& 4

Pre school 1
- Designed for children aged 3 to 4 years, perfect for beginners starting swimming lessons
- Small class sizes for focused support and skill development
- Teachers assist children in the water using flotation aids like armbands
- Kids learn to float, travel on front and back, submerge, and jump in confidently
- Adults can watch from the viewing area, with the option to stay close by during the first few weeks (subject to management approval)

Pre school 2
- For children who have passed Stage 1 or can confidently submerge, float on front and back, and paddle/kick short distances without flotation aids
- Supported by a teacher in the water
AWARDS Ducklings 3 & 4

Stage 1
Aimed at children who have been through
the pre-school classes (who may be younger
than 4 years)
OR
NEW children from 4 years, who have
started school and can stand in water and
feel comfortable without armbands.
Children will learn swimming skills such as
floating and travelling independently (with
noodles/ floats) on their front and back,
submerging and jumping in. Children are
supported by a teacher in the water.

Stage 1

Stage 2
Aimed at children who have either passed
stage 1 or can submerge confidently, float
on their front and back and can paddle/kick
short distance without the use of floatation
aids.
Children are supported by a teacher in the
water.
AWARDS 5 metres Stage 2

Older Beginners
(8 yrs. +) or (12 yrs. +)
Stage 1 & 2. Aimed at non-swimmers and
beginners aged either 8+ or 12+ and over.
Children are supported by a teacher in the
water.
AWARDS Puffin Award Stage 1, 5 metres Stage 2

SEN Beginners
Stage 1 & 2. Aimed at children who required
more individual support due to physical,
sensory, or neurodiverse needs. These
classes operate at smaller ratios with a
teacher in the water.

Stage 3
Aimed at children who have either passed
stage 2 or are able to swim 5 metres on both
their front and back without the use of
floatation aids.
Pupils must be able to regain standing and
blow bubbles into the water repeatedly and
confidently.
AWARDS 10 metres Stage 3 Water Safety 1

Stage 4
Aimed at children who have either passed
stage 3 or can swim 10 metres on their front
and back unaided. Pupils should be able to
confidently jump in and submerge under
water and ideally have experience in deep
water.

Older Improvers
(8 yrs. +) or (12 yrs. +)
Stage 3 & 4. Aimed at children who have
either passed stage 1 & 2 in the older
beginners’ class or are able to swim 5
metres on both their front and back without
the use of floatation aids.

SEN Improvers
Stage 3 & 4. Aimed at children who required
more individual support due to physical,
sensory, or neurodiverse needs. These
classes operate at smaller ratios.

Stage 5
Aimed at children who have either passed
stage 4 or have knowledge of all 4 strokes.
Pupils must be confident in deep water and
be able to tread water.

Stage 6
Aimed at children who have either passed
stage 5 or are confident swimming lengths
of the pool. Pupils will further develop
stroke technique over distance and develop
further skills such as sculling and
somersaults.

Aimed at children who have either passed stage 6 or are fully confident swimming
lengths of the pool, including swimming
distances with clothes on.

Water Safety 3

Older Advanced
(8 yrs. +) or (12 yrs. +)
Stage 5, 6 & 7. Aimed at children who have
passed stage 3 & 4 in the older beginners’
class or are able to swim to a reasonable
standard out of their depth. (The class might
start at stage 5 and criteria added for 6 and 7
when appropriate.)

Aimed at swimmers who have passed stage
7. Swimmers will perfect technique, dives
and turns, perform drills and build stamina
in the Competitive Swimming Stages in
preparation for a club environment.

Junior Swimfit
Aimed at older swimmers (12- 16 years) who
would like to continue with swimming for
fun and exercise. This could be a
continuation from stage 7, if they are 12
years old or a sidestep from other sport
specific classes.

Challenge Awards Bronze, Silver, Gold, Honours
Aimed at swimmers who have passed stage
8.
Swimmers will further perfect technique,
dives, starts and turns and perform drills to
build stamina in preparation for a club
environment.

Rookie Lifeguard Bronze, Silver, Gold
Aimed at swimmers who have passed stage
7.
*Children would benefit from completing the
challenge awards beforehand, but this is not
compulsory.
The programme runs through awards in
Bronze, Silver and Gold and teaches
valuable lifesaving skills, rescue techniques
and CPR.

Water Polo
Aimed at swimmers who have passed stage
7. Swimmers will further develop sport
specific skills that would be suitable to play
water polo and lead into a club environment.

Aimed at swimmers who have passed stage
7. Swimmers will further develop sport
specific skills to be able to combine
sequences of movement and progress into a
club environment.

Adults should be able to swim
approximately 10 metres in at least one
stroke. Adults will further develop stroke
technique and gain confidence in deep
water.

confident in water and learn skills such as
